Carey Allen, director of division services for the Cement, Lime, Gypsum & Allied Workers, disclosed in a union meeting that the company is waiting for the market conditions to improve so they can resume operations in their plant in Oglesby, News Tribune reported.
According to D-Spring Valley Rep. Frank Mautino, there are other factors to consider before reopening the plant. Buzzi has to deal with environmental permits and gain mineral rights on 30 state-owned acres. The company also needs to discuss its electric deal with the city of Oglesby.
About 40 displaced workers feared they would not have enough time to save their jobs. Their insurance is about to expire on Dec. 1, and if the plant shuts down, they will be laid off without compensation, since their recall rights will only be effective until next year.
Allen asked the company to extend the deadlines. However, Joe Bezely of Ladd, president of the cement, lime and gypsum workers, a division of the Brotherhood of Boilermakers, said the chance of granting the deadline extensions is unlikely. “We’ve tried it before and had no success with it,” he said.
